    Tracing The Glory Of Banten Lama Part.1

    Banten lama only known as a place of pilgrimage among Moslem in Indonesia, in fact Banten Lama was a witness of history when  the Sultanate of Banten experienced glory in the XVI-XVIII century AD.

    The complex legacy of the Islamic Sultanate of Banten located at District Kasemen, Serang, Banten which could be seen from The water system map settings on Banten sultanate period.

    We Followed the road to Banten Lama and decided first place to visited was Kaibon Palace (Istana Kaibon), because it lies on the roadside.

    Kaibon  Palace was built in 1815 as a residence Queen Aisha, the mother of Sultan Muhammad Rafiuddin who served as leader of government because her son was five years old.   Dutch destroy Kaibon Palace in 1832 because of rejection of the request  of Governor-General Daendels which states that the Sultan Syafiudin asked to continue the road building project Anyer-Panarukan and port for the Dutch fleet in the Gulf of Pepper (Labuhan).

    From Kaibon we directly went to second place: Surosowan Palace


    Surosowan Palace, the residence of the sultans of Banten, of Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin in 1552 to Sultan Haji that reigned in 1672-1687. Originally, the palace building area of ​​nearly 4 hectares was named Kedaton Pakuwan. Made from a pile of red bricks and rocks, with a rhombus-shaped tiles are red. Walls of the fort consists of two parts (inside and outside) with a thickness of each 1 meter and 3 meter separation distance, contains solid ground as a binder. The fort is made of bricks size 15 x 30 cm, with lime and sand as a fastening 

    Building square pond in the middle of the palace is that there are other sights in the castle. According to historical records it is the former pond debris Rara Denok, for bathing the princess.

    Surosowan Palace has three built from destroyed by war. Here one can see works of art of high decoration at the time. Can be found on the remaining tiles are installed with the composition of red rhombus, ditch systems, and underground water channels into the palace complex.

    According to Paul Van Solt (Dutch sailor who has logged the trip), the fortress palace in 1605 and 1607 had experienced a fire. But the fate of the palace Surosowan devastated after Daendels led the army to destroy the palace on November 21, 1808.

    Third Place, we visited  Masjid Agung Banten which  convieniently located nearby Surosowan Palace.

    Founded by Sunan Gunung Jati (ruled the Sultanate of Banten in 1552 to 1570), this Great Mosque has 23 meters tower and is the most famous mosque in old Banten site and is always crowded by pilgrims, especially on the anniversary of the great days of Islam. Nowadays, for safety reason visitors cannot enter and climb the mosque tower since on 2008 there was significant crack found in tower wall.

    Other historic buildings that can be enjoyed is Rante Bridge.


    Located in front of the Palace of Surosowan, precisely in the northern Great Mosque of Banten Lama. This bridge was once used as a toll tax for a small vessel or a vessel of foreign trade which entered the royal city.
